Hi guys

Yeah, you are correct using the existing elements that Umbraco use will result in issues when you upgrade.

A possible workaround is to create your own sprite file and your own style sheet. This will stop the website updates from overwriting your custom section icons. You can link your new CSS file in the umbraco.aspx, however with every update you may need to link your custom stylesheet back up to the umbraco.aspx page.

Hope that helps

I tend to avoid altering the sprites.png and the css and just use an image file instead, as both of those files can be overwritten by Umbraco during an upgrade, which means you have to re-apply your icons again when you're done.

Can you specify why you use the existing icon sprite?

Don't get me wrong, I am very fond of using sprites in theming a website, but in this occasion I have mixed feelings on this technique, as it can result in trouble when an Umbraco update ships with a new icon sprite overwriting your adjusted sprite.

read up more about the possible ways to implement an icon here:
http://forum.umbraco.org/yaf_postst9217_Adding-Custom-Tray-Icon.aspx

if i'm wrong or overlooked something here please point it out to me :) as i really believe sprites are the best solution (if you can overcome the update problem)
